Dowdy Catches Up - Racing, MX Nationals & Missing Bike

3/26/2002

Recapped By: Carl Hein

Well the Junkyard Dog is back at it in the 125cc east Supercross series on his KTM 125.With the undertaking of a 125cc program in the later stages of the game John and his mechanic Ron have been busting tail to ensure all is running smoothly at each race.

VRM:

Well John itís time to catch up with you.How has your session been progressing so far?

Dowdy:

I would like to say Iíve won but as you can see the 125 east is a really loaded class.Iíve been riding well at many of the events but so far the whole season can be summed up with this sentence,ďI just canít get a startĒ.Every race Iíve been starting in the back of the pack.Iíve tried everything so far but nothing has worked in the main events.I guess all I can do is keep working at it.

VRM:

Thatís funny because last year on the KTM Big Bore and the year prior on the Kawasaki you were a consistent top starter and often pulled holeshots on both bikes.

Dowdy:

Thatís true but the 125cc is a lot touchier on the starts. You need to be extremely precise or youíre written off before youíre out of the gate.

VRM:

What have you been doing to stay in shape between SX races?

Dowdy:

Iíve been riding other riderís SX tracks.Iíve been at Shae Bentleyís track in Georgia and Kevin Windhamís in Mississippi. In fact I will be riding at Kevinís in the near future again.

VRM:

Now that your back in the mix of Supercross what do you find is the big difference between the leaders and the next tier of riders in the class?

Dowdy:

Timing. If your timing is there youíll be at the front of the pack.

VRM:

What are you doing during the down time with series heading to the 125cc West coast and then a week off prior to St. Louis?

Dowdy:

Ha.I came home for a while figuring I would ride here but to my surprise itís cold and snowy.Had to plow the other day.Everyone told me it was so nice at home and I was excited about the prospect of riding at home but it appears not to be.

VRM:

With only a few races remaining will you be riding the outdoor series as a one-man team?

Dowdy:

Now that you mentioned it weíre looking at bringing Keith S. Johnson aboard to ride the KTM 520 in the 250cc class. Now weíll have two bikes under the tent similar to last year.

VRM:

Many people have speculated that you may race a 125cc in the Outdoor Nationals. What will we see you on for the Outdoor Nationals?

Dowdy:

I will be riding the 250cc class. What fans will have to do is take a close look at the power plant in the KTM frame.

VRM:

OK John what are you trying to tell us?

Dowdy:

At a few select outdoor nationals I may choose to run a 250cc KTM SX.

VRM:

What will determine where the bike shows up?

Dowdy:

I will have to sit down and analyze what tracks the 250 we be an advantage at prior to racing the series.

VRM:

Just a comment John that means youíll have driven all three KTM race machines in 2002 SX/MX national events.

Dowdy:

Ya, I guess thatís right.Never thought of it that way.

VRM:

With the expansion of the team are there any new sponsors aboard for you?

Dowdy:

Yes I would love to mention that the Boston Celtics are supporting the team for 2002.Youíll see the Celtics sticker associated with our team in 2002.This is really a unique sponsorship and Iím glad to be associated with a prominent and dominant franchise in the NBA like the Boston Celtics has been over the years.

VRM:

What about your sons KTM minicycle, which was taken at Daytona?

Dowdy:

Boy that was a cool bike.Ron had a full graphics kit on it and it was looking so sharp. It seemed more people were looking at that bike than mine.I was really frustrated when the bike disappeared but things are looking better now as the bike is supposedly on itís way back to our home.Jeff at Cernics.com received an anonymous call stating a friend of the caller took the bike and would be sending it back.Jeff has it on the way to my place.I hope itís in the same condition as it was that day.

VRM:

I guess that catches us up.Canít wait to see you on the podium again.

Dowdy:

I agree.See you at St. Louis.
