John Happily Gives Account of his Podium Finish at Mt. Morris, PA

I just had the best race of the year for me. I am very happy on my performance. I have never seen such mud. I even had trouble just walking to the line. It was 6" of slop all over the place. Everyone was covered in mud. I want to thank all the fans for coming out to the race and braving the weather.

Now for the motos. The first moto I got the holeshot and of course the holeshot award. I tried something that I learned from the years of racing. I kept my rear tire on top of the backboard instead of putting my bike into the starting groove right away. When the 30-second board went up then I put my bike into the groove. This kept my bike from sinking into the muck. I do not know if it really helps, but I did get both holeshots. After the first turn I had the lead and then Ezra Lusk got around me on the bottom of a section. I thought to myself, oh no. So I got on the gas and decided to bonsai it down the next hill to pass him back. I was hitting all the ruts good and keeping my momentum going. It was all coming together for me. With 2 laps to go I kept looking back and thought to myself, man I'm winning this thing. I even stalled my Kawasaki in a turn, I kicked it 3 or 4 times, got it started but this gave the other guys a chance to close that gap. I concentrated on being smooth. I slowed my pace a little and that's when Vuillemin started to catch me.  After the checkered flag dropped I was relieved. I was pumped be back on the podium. The ruts were as deep as the side panels.  There were 30' puddles a foot deep. The track as a real mess. I was expecting the guys to catch me but they didn't.

The second moto I was off the pace. I made lots of mistakes. I went off the track 3 or 4 times got passed by a couple of guys when I was off playing in the deep mud. I did not feel as comfortable as in the first moto and it made a difference in the final results. In the end I took 3rd overall. I am very happy with this. My back still hurts me but it is getting better.

I am racing this upcoming weekend at Southwick. I want to practice more this week and train hard. I can finally ride more since my
injury and I am going to take full advantage of it. I plan on using this weekend as a confidence builder to the rest of the season.
