Dowd Crashes During Practice Session in California

Recapped By: Doug Hein

On Tuesday, Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki 250cc rider John Dowd crashed during practice at the current Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki MX Compound in California, crushing the T5 vertebra in the middle of his back. According to Dowd's doctor, "This is one of the best vertebrae to break because of the cartilage and rib cage which surround, [and subsequently protect], this vertebra."

"This is one of the hardest crashes I have ever experienced," Dowd commented on Friday, April 28. According to the Massachusetts native, "I was going up a whooped-up hill, and the back end swapped out on me and threw me down to the ground extremely hard. I got up right away, stumbled a few steps, and fell back to the ground."

Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki teammates Ricky Carmichael, of Florida, and Larry Ward, of South Carolina, were also testing for the outdoor season at the same time. John was not scheduled to test that day but wanted to ride anyway.

The veteran rider added, "I was in the second of my two 30-minute motos, and just at the 25 minute mark [I] went down."

John admits that he is still in good sprits, and he is still training hard. Optimistically, he relates, "I can still work my upper and lower body with no strain to my back. I am still mountain biking and looking forward to my return."

Dowd will not be racing in Las Vegas, Nev., but is looking ahead to Glen Helen for his return. "In about two weeks I will have to make a decision on when I can come back at 100 percent," said the ever-enthusiastic John Dowd.
